Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Time Allowed for Collection of Credit Card Debts
Was contacted by collection agency in another state that they had assumed my credit card debit with Bank One from 1989. The amount they claim I owed on card is $2500- the amount they are trying to collect is $7,500 (includes interest). Collection agency will not provide any documentation that I am the person who signed for purchases from years 1989-1990. They are calling my work and home 24/7. Collection agency says they will garnish my wages and send process servers to my work to embarrass me if I do not pay. I do not know who this collection agency is, and I do not owe them any money. The BBB said that I was not responsible for any credit card debts over 4 years and to write to company and ask for proof of signature on charges, which I did but have had no response. I am afraid that that the collection agency will cause me problems. What are my rights. Please help me!
