Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Typo on debt settlement letter

I'm in the process of getting a home equity loan to pay off my credit card debts. I called the collection agencies and negotiated a debt settlement. One of the agencies mailed a letter for an amount much less than what we discussed over the phone. I called & asked what my payoff amount was & they told me the same (low) amount that was in the letter. Am I legally only required to pay what is in writing? Or will I still be required to pay the higher amount?

Re: Typo on debt settlement letter

It all depends on the wording of the settlement agreement (letter). You may want to have an affordable attorney review what is in writing to best protect you.
