Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
unclaimed property
I was searching the unclaimed property data base for California, and I found that my now deceased grandmother has about 1,000 owed to her by the Controller of the State of California. Do I have any right to claim this property as her heir? My father is on drugs and I don't know if he is dead or alive, what part if any does he need to play in this? Thanks

Re: unclaimed property
If she left a will, the property descends according to those provisions. If she did not, then her husband [if living] and her children inherit 1/2 each.
Grandchildren seldom inherit unless there is a will, although it is not impossible if everyone else is deceased, which is not your case.
Unfortunately you have no claim to this money unless you were a beneficiary under a will. If there was no will, your father has the claim, not you.
