Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

voluntary car repo

9 monthes ago i bought a car from a used dealership.

i was a first time buyer and at the time of purchase i only had my drivers permit, but was scheduled to get my liscence. they got me financed and sold me the car. then when they found out that i didn't have my drivers liscence they asked me to return the car until i had my drivers liscence, so i did. we had already signed the contract and i already paid the down payment, when i returned the car they put it as a voluntary repo, sold the car, and is now telling me that i owe them the remainder of the money for the car. i never defaulted on the loan, is this right?
