Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

re: Warrant in Debt (Civil Claim for Money)

I live out of state and I just received hearing notice from Virginia civil claim's court that an attorney I hired years ago is claiming unpaid debt. How can I challenge this without travelling to Virginia? I terminated our attorney / client relationship after only 6 months because the service was unsatisfactory. I paid an initial retainer and a couple follow-up payments, but refused to pay the final bill. I sent several emails directly to this attorney explaining why.

The debt amount is less than $1000 and I find this ridiculous that an attorney is clogging up our legal system in this method.

Thank you.

Write to the court that you now live in California and you have never been served with the complaint so the court lacks personal jurisdiction over you. First contact the attorney and point out it wold be a breach of legal ethics that you could report to the Bar Association there for him to try to get a default judgment without having served you with the complaint.
