Written Authorization to perform work

Is it required in the state of California to get written approval from a cutomer before performing work?

Uhhhmmmmm - what kind of work, what kind of customer, what kind of approval??? You didn't give enough information to answer your question.

Generally, however, I would always advise anyone doing work for a customer to get their agreement in writing with all of the terms of "the deal"; what they are going to pay, when are they going to pay, what you are going to do for them, when is your work due, etc... Leaving your relationship with a customer up to a verbal agreement is always a bad idea, unless you are selling products "over the counter" in a store setting.
