Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
A few years ago, I was attending a education program at a university. I qualified for financial aid assistance, but the university required that I send in paperwork. I sent in paperwork only to be told a few weeks later that they still had not received my paperwork. It took some time to obtain the necessary documents a second time, but I stayed in constant contact with the financial aid secretary during this time. Meanwhile I continued attending the program which was a nineteen month program for a Bachelor's degree. After attending the program for about a year, I was informed by mail of a "deadline" that passed the day I received the letter for turning in my financial paperwork. Needless to say, I called immediately but the financial aid office was closed for the day. I called the next day and was informed that there was nothing they could do. I was also informed that if I wanted to stay in the program, I had to come up with over $13,000 in one week. I was unable to do so, therefore, I was kicked out of the program with only seven months to go. The university is now saying that I owe them over $19, 000. I disagree, I believe that it was clerical error on the part of the university that my paperwork was lost. I certainly qualified for financial aid during that time. Also, about a year later, they mistakenly sent me someone else's paperwork that included sensitive information about this person. It makes me wonder what happened to my paperwork. Is there anything I can do to settle with the university? I am willing to pay for books and other materials that I used, but the classes I took are irrelevant now. I am attending a different university and since I could not get transcripts from the other school, I have retaken all the classes.
