when a lawyer files a 995 motion to

dismiss, what happens next?

Especially when the da really doesn't

have much to go off of, just hearsay?

The judge denies it (most of the time) and you go to trial.

If the judge denies the 995 (happens often) the case starts anew, with a new arraignment, etc. One big difference is that the case is then set for trial, not preliminary hearing.
