You always should have a lawyer. For one, you just do not know what kind of possible legal defenses you might have, especially on a case like DUI where there are lots of technicalities involved. Also, you absolutely do not get any advantage or benefit with the DA if you deal with them without a lawyer.

If you cannot afford private counsel, public defender will be appointed for you for free. Please do yourself a favor and do not contemplate representing yourself. Absolutely ALWAYS a bad idea.

You need a lawyer. The deal you get from the District Attorney will not be at all similar to the deal an attorney will be able to work out for you.

Next, an attorney should take a look at the facts surrounding your situation and determine what evidence may or may not be available for the district attorney to use against you. The advantages of having an attorney are not just having them talk to the DA. They can also analyze the case and determine what is really going on and what type of penalties you are facing.

In criminal matters you should always have an attorney. If you can not afford one then a Public Defender can be appointed for you. However an individual acting as their own attorney in a criminal matter is only asking for more problems than they already have.

Yes, hire a lawyer if you can. If you cannot afford a private attorney you can always had the PD defend you but dont do it on your own.
