Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Last may a 19 year old male stole $200 worth of marijuana from me when I found him and tried to retrieve it he punched me in the face twice. He was arrested and I told the police he stole $40 from me. Now his lawyer wants me to sign a civil agreement staying that he stole weed from me instead. Would I be in danger of prosecution or gettin in trouble if I admit I lied to police. Is signing a civil agreement in my best interests if I would in fact like to help lower his sentence.

You need to discuss your case in detail with a lawyer right away.

Yes, signing the proposed agreement could get you into trouble -- not just because you would admit you lied to police, but also because you would admit you possessed drugs.

The defendant's lawyer is trying to protect him, not you. You need advice from a lawyer who is on your side.
