Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

If I have an active perscription for Vicoden and I run out, and I borrow some from a co worker whom also has an active perscription am I quilty of breaking any laws, ie trafficing furnishing.... you see my work now wants to suspend me for 30 days for this because of emails to a coworker for the above senario. No parties myself or my co worker were caught in the "act" just off of emails back and forth

Having a prescription allows you to get particular drugs from a pharmacist, not from whoever happens to have some lying around. It would be illegal for your friend to give you some. I'm not sure offhand if you would be breaking any laws, but it probably doesn't matter. Your employer can discipline you for misconduct even if it doesn't qualify as a crime.

Whether this particular discipline is appropriate is another question. That question is about employment law, not criminal law, so you may want to ask it under that category.

I don't understand what Mr. Hoffman means when he states that it is illegal but he does not know if you would be breaking any laws.

Of course you would be breaking the law. You would be possessing a controlled substance that you did not have a prescription for, but rather that someone else had a prescription for. If you run out, you either get another prescription from the doctor, or you have it refilled at the pharmacy.
