Can an adult parent legally restrain their adult child from leaving the house if they are drunk or on drugs?

Are they driving? You can take reasonable steps to prevent a person from harming other people. YOU HAVE NO SPECIAL rights based on being their parent. But if they are going to drive, and you believe they are drunk or on drugs, you can prevent them, BUT CALL 911. You can detain, but it must be for the limited purpose of having the police intervene.
