How long until the DA must file charges for a possession charge after arrested?

Possession of a controlled substance (something more than marijuana) is a felony and the statute of limitations is three years.

Your question does not provide enough facts to give you an accurate answer. In general the Statue of Limitations controls the period of time that a crime may be charged within. Different charges have different Statute of Limitations and so it depends on what type of possession you are referring to and the severity of the amount. Possession charges can apply to a number of different crimes from Controlled Substances to Child Pornography and other things as well. So I suggest you be a little more specific.
