what are the criminal charges and penalties when a person attempts suicide in calif. i need specific answers re: the law.

There is no Penal Code section regarding "attempted suicide." Penal Code Section 401 makes aiding, advising, or encouraging suicide a felony. The penalty for that is 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years in state prison.
A person who attempts suicide will likely be committed involuntarily for psychiatric treatment until the person is determined not to be a danger to himself.
