Can a DA seek monetary compensation for

The DA can seek a restitution order in the criminal case. Or you can sue in civil court (much easier once the defendant is convicted in the criminal case). Or both. A lawyer can often help find additional issues, parties or insurance companies that can be held liable.

Restitution is required by statute for losses to victims of crime. It is often complex even in simple cases and can have severe consequences if paymentis wilfully not made.
If you do not already have counsel, obtain counsel for this issue.
My practice is limited ot hmicide defense.
