Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

my boyfriend was charged 4 counts forgery is in possession of checks/money order with intent to commit a crime, he has never been charged for this type of crime but has prior arrest for receiving stolen property and is on probation. What kind of sentencing is he looking at, could this be dropped to a misdemeanor or is he looking at jail time and how long?
