Your question is way too vague. I would need to know whether a weapon was used, the extent of the injuries, the accused's record, and the nature of the incident. A simple assault carries a maximum sentence of six (6) months in jail and a fine of $1,000.00. As Mr. Shapiro points out, however, you are not clear whether or not it was a simple assault. There are more severe penalties for assault and battery, or assault with a deadly weapon, etc.
