What's the best way to find an excellent criminal attorney if you don't know people in the city/state where you need advice?

This is a good start. Other options include talking to friends or other people you know who have had to hire an attorney. Avoid the yellow pages, as that just tells you who is out there, not who might be best for your situation. Also, check the State Bar listing at www.calbar.ca.gov for discipline history.
