If someone is sentenced to 9 years, given 1 year and 9 months credit and eligible for 50 percent time in California what does that actually mean?

Re: California sentencing meanings
Generally, if someone is eligible for 50% credit in prison (it only applies in California State Prison . . . not federal prison and not county jail), then take the total sentence of 9 years, reduce by half (4.5 years) then deduct the time credited (1 year 9 months) for a balance of 2 years 9 months remaining. This is only an approximation, and it assumes that the person gets a full 50% good behavior/work credit. The 50% is not exact.
