Second call

I was in district criminal court in Los Angeles the other day. When the judge was reading off the list of defendants for the day, in some instances the DA would reply ''second call'' and then the judge would move to the next name on the list. What does ''second call'' mean? does it have something to do with probation violation? (most of the cases that day appeared to be probation violation cases.) please let me know. thanks.

It just means somebody wasn't ready when the court first called the case and asked that the case be called again after the judge had finished going through the other cases on the day's docket.

Second call, in this context, loosely translates to, "Judge, I need more time ... call this again later, okay?" It actually has nothing to do with probation violations.
