Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Car sale without transfer of title

I sold my car on Ebay to a private party. The other party took possession of the car soon after the sale. I gave the other party a completed bill of sale and notified the DMV of transfer of ownership. I cashed their check but have not paid off the car loan yet. They have not received the title for the car. Now a detective is attempting to contact me to ask questions about the sale. The detective is harassing my family at their places of business and other employees that work for them. He says he realizes this is a civil matter but want to talk to me before it becomes a criminal matter. My question is can this become a criminal matter or would it remain a civil matter?

Re: Car sale without transfer of title

The person who bought the car from you is an idiot for giving you the money before making sure the lender was paid. Do not talk to the "detective." Just pay off the loan and obtain the pink slip and give it to the buyer, or else you will deserve the consequences.
