Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was caught at a border patrol checkpoint with marijuana, less than an ounce in southern california. the agent said i was being charged with simple possession of marijuana. This is where it gets weird and confusing for me. I say okay i'm being charged with simple possession do I have to pay a fine or go to court. His response "no". He said it'll only stay on my record. Not sure what record he was talking about since I'd imagine i'd have to court for the misdemeanor and be convicted to be on my record. So now I'm wondering if the guy lied to me about having to go to court. He took my fingerprints, picture, and information. I did not receive a citation and I did not sign anything. I know this doesn't make a difference since he was a federal agent but i have my medical card.

I suggest you speak to an attorney and try to find out of charges were filed in federal court. Your medical marijuana card is not a defense to federal charges, which can get serious.
