Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was caught on camera shoplifting and was approached by an investigator in my house a couple weeks later. The item was a compact powder. However, I was picked out by the security at the store as stealing before. When confronted with this question, I fessed up everything. As a young adult with no experience in anything on the wrong side of the law. I returned the powder, as that was the only thing I had. Previously, I have stolen a nail polish, and a small cheap ring. While I am not sure what caused this lapse in judgement, I am terrified. I have never even come close to committing a crime before and am not sure what I should do now, and what will become of me as I am almost done with school to be a teacher. If there is anything I should do, can do, or that will benefit me in this situation, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Yes, talk to a lawyer in person. Also, do not discuss details of the case on line.
