Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I am being charged with a felony because I go into a fight with my boyfriend. We got physical and hit each other, but I got mad and threw the phone and I am being charged with a felong because of the phone being pulled out of the wall. I have never had any trouble before ever. can they change the charges?
