Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

charged with PC475c

I was recently arrested for what I don't believe was my fault. I recieved emails about a ''job offer''; saying I would cash checks for their business and send them the money. They replied to my resume I posted on the internet. I never said I would do it, but a few days later, I recieved a check in the mail, made out to me. I wasn't sure if it was from them, or what it was so after making sure the bank it was drawn on was legitimate and asking friends what they thought, I took it to a check cashing place, thinking if it wasn't right, they would tell me they couldn't cash it. But instead, a cop showed up and arrested me. He said he didn't even know what was going on at first so I wasn't under arrest, but after talking with a detective, he told me I was going to jail for possession of a false check. Is there any way I can fight this without hiring a lawyer, as I have no money, and any way they can find the people who sent the check to me? Is there a chance I will go back to jail, or face serious charges? I have a clean record and was never in jail before. My court date is on Thursday and I am very worried about everything. Is there anything you can tell me?

You have fallen victim to one of the newest internet scams. retain an attorney or have the court appoint an attorney to represent you. Don't talk to the police or any person except your attorney.
