Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
I was going through some old checks and realized that an ex-roommate wrote a check to herself on one of my checks back in 1997. Is there a statute of limitation on this crime or can I try to prosecute?

There is indeed. Barring some very unusual circumstances, it's now too late for the state to prosecute her. It's also too late for you to sue her civilly.
