Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Child abuse
I have a friend whose father is on trial for sexual molestation of his three daughters (my friend's sisters). My friend is on the verge of leaving for an extended vacation in Thailand ( a year or more). He was recently visited by a private investigator, representing his father, who wanted to ask him some questions. My friend told him he was busy and did not want to talk to him.
My friend does not want to have anything to do with his father or the trial. He is concerned that he could be subpoened to give evidence. Can he be forced to return to give evidence? Should he provide a written statement before he leaves?

Re: Child abuse
he need not give a statement unless subpoenaed to do so; if that statement could in any way incriminate him he should not give a statement; he could be subpoenaed from thailand, but the prosecution may not go to the expense of finding him
