Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

On what circumstances or is it legally possible for the police to enter a private residence or apartment and place anytype of audio or video surveillance when the owner is not home?

I realize with a warrant, but would you mind letting me know what type of behaviors or infractions would make law enforcement go to such drastic measures and are there different levels of warrants that stipulate to what extent a persons privacy can be invaded? Hypothetically speaking the case at hand would entail narcotics. Thank you for your time

The type of surveillance you described is very rare, and expensive; and while I don't know you or your circumstances, it's far more likely that the drugs you're taking have made you paranoid.
