Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was cited today for using pepper spray against a my crazy brother who physically charged at me with a cocked fist.I felt very threatened. I have a prior(within 2 months) police report documented against him for very violent threats towards me via phone calls. This person took a shovel to my car after I maced him causing damage. I called 911. The police cited me for simple battery (citizens arrest on his part) and him for vandalism. He has a violent temper and criminal record for violence. Please help me as I am a teacher with a family. Is there even a case?
