Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

When does Civil become Criminal?

I have filed a civil lawsuit for a car that was taken from me. This entire situation began with a battery incident. There is a police report and an injury report. I have been to court and I did subpoeana the defendant but he did not show up. The Judge has dismissed the case. What do I do next? The car is garaged very close to where I live. I have seen it on the road 3 different times. But I have no idea of the exact location. I have asked around town about my car but no information. Do I call the police? Or do I get a Civil Lawyer?
