Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Do I have the right to get a copy of my case file for a current criminal case from the public defender?

You have a right to your file. But the law may require that certain sections be redacted.
You definitely have a right to get a copy of the police report that is the basis of the charges you are facing, minus the names and addresses of the witnesses and any possible victims in the reports. But the P.D. Doesn't want to give it to you for the same reason you are asking us the question. The P.D. Doesn't spend more than 5 minutes with you(if you're lucky) and getting you a report would take them about 30 minutes or more to sanitize the report. The more important question is why do you still have a P.D.? Many good defense attorneys take payments and you should look into a qualified criminal defense attorney in or near your area if you want ANY KIND OF A DEFENSE. I wish you well.............
