Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

right to council

can a non-attorney act as council to an in custody defendent during the time in which that defendent is seeking an attorney to be represented by? this would be strictly for the purpose of assisting the defendent with research, filings,general information and the exchange of any and all necessary forms, documents,ect.ect. no court appearances or legal advice, just temporary assistance. could this non-attorney have access to the defendent while they were in custody?

It is my understanding that individuals in custody assist each other with research etc, but do not represent the individual. Attorneys hire individuals to provide research, assistance in preparing doucments and other such ministerial duties, these individuals are not attorneys.

No, you can only be represented in court by a licensed attorney.
