How much do criminal attorneys require as a retainer fee and is that fee refundable if the case is dismissed or if the entire retainer is not used?

There is no general rule. The answer will vary from one attorney to another, and will also depend on the details of your case. (The fee for a simple drug-possession case will be lower than for a complicated murder case.) Whether a fee is refundable, and under what circumstances, will depend on what your contract says.
