Criminal Recordkeeping

Which Bureau/Agency maintains the records of people convicted of crimes? Would this also be the same agency that would handle making corrections when there is mis-reporting.

Re: Criminal Recordkeeping

There is no single repository for this information. These records are kept at the courthouse where the case was filed. In addition, law enforcement agencies of all kinds may have databases. These include county sheriffs, local police, the state Department of Justice, the FBI. There is also a database called the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Sometimes criminal convictions may appear on credit reports too. If there is misreporting, you should contact the agency that would have furnished the report to other agencies. These include the arresting agency and the court.
