self defense ?
in california is it legal to shot and kill someone on property that does not belong to you? or even on property that does belong to you?

It's legal to defend yourself by force, though the amount of force you can use will depend upon the circumstances. Deadly force is generally not allowed but can be when faced with a serious, iminent threat of death or great bodily injury.
