Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
A detective contacted me today (not sure how she got my number) ans said she wanted to know if i could come down and talk to her regardign a case she was investigating. She said she couldn't really tell me much about it over the phone. I was hesitant and wanted more information before I would agree to meet with her, but she kept saying that she didnt want to discuss it all over the phone and she wanted to show me something. I just said that if she couldnt at lease give me some information on what this was about or who this was about then I wouldnt be able to help her and that I didnt want any part in anything. She then told me that it was regarding a check that was cashed? I again asked for more info and she just said that I wasnt going to get arrested when I went down or anything like that but that they just believe I knew something or was involved in something and had some questions for me. I again wanted more info and she just said wither you will come down or you wont. Since I was at lunch when she called I advised her that I would have to get back to her and I took down her number. Naturally I dont want have anything to do with whatever it is she is investigating, but what should I do? Do I not call her back or answer her calls? By doing that is that admitting guilt? Can she charge me with something without talking to me first or getting statement from me? What happens then?

Don't go. Don't talk to the detective, not one word. Have the phone number of a lawyer handy. Tell the detective you want to call the lawyer.
