If you go in with an attorney you retain, there is no way a judge can deny your rights to have private counsel. If you cannot afford to hire a private attorney, you may ask your public defender if you can substitute in another public defender in his place.

One method is to hire another attorney. The other alternative is to represent yourself. So you need to tell the judge you want to represent yourself. If that doesn't work. Then you need to set and serve a motion to be your own attorney. You might speak candidly and politely to your Public Defender first. And find out if they'll substitute somone else in the P. D's. Office.
