Dropping criminal charges

I would like to know how one would go about dropping charges against someone for assault. Is it even possible to drop criminal charges or does it become a state matter once the charges are filed?

It becomes a state matter when the police become involved. The police make a determination as to whether the case should be submitted to the district attorney. The district attorney then decides whether or not to file charges.

If charges have been filed with the DA's office or City Attorney's office, then you can speak with the proper government agency to discuss reducing or dropping charges. The ball's in the their court.
