Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

exhibition of illegally filmed videotape from private residence

I recently discovered that an ex roomate of mine, hid surveilance equiptment in my home and has been showing it around the neighborhood. I know that it is illegal but can you tell me who and how I contact the proper authorities, what evidence I need to provide and what is the penalty for such a crime. Also what are the penalties for someone who showed (exhibited) what they knew was an illegally obtained tape to others for the purpose of harrassment.

Thank You -

Re: exhibition of illegally filmed videotape from private residence

you should contact your local police agency to report this action as it is a crime. It must be the police agency that handles the city in which the crime was committed. Provide the police department with as much information as possible, including witnesses, evidence, etc. After the criminal matter resolves, you may want to contact an attorney to see about possibly filing a civil lawsuit against this person. Keep in mind, if the person doesn't have any assets such as owning a home or business, etc., there may be nothing to collect. Good Luck
