You should be able to get the judge to continue the arraignment to allow you to hire an attorney. If you have selected an attorney discuss this with the attorney. Many attorneys will attend the arraignment to explain the situation to the judge. If the attorney has not been selected or will not go to the arraignment you can ask the judge to continue the arraigment to allow you to hire an attorney. Most judges will continue the arraignment to allow time to hire an attorney.

You may have to waive time. That is waive the statutory time to either start the trial or preliminary examination. Waiving time is normal in cases where the defedantis out of custody.

An attorney, that you may be considering hiring, can make a 'special appearance' and ask the judge to continue the arraignment. This is done frequently.
