Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

If I am facing a murder charge and I really dont want to take the case to trial. right now I have a public defender my family is trying to get me a attorney. lets say i start the prelim with a public deffender in the middle can I switch to a attorney?or do I have to stay with the public defender till the end of the prelim and then take it to trial if i dont get a deal?

Murder cases usually have thousands of pages of police reports. No competent attorney would agree to walk in unprepared and take over the preliminary hearing from a public defender who had started it, even if a judge would allow it.
