Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Failure to appear and mental illness
I failed to appear in court many times since 2002, my defense is that I was homeless and on the street, and have paperwork stating a psychiatric diagnosis. I was without money or transportation, I had no immediate friends or family, the bus did not run early enough to transport me. I was required to appear in a courthouse nearly 30 miles away from where I chose to reside. The courthouse was also located in a bad area. Is it possible to slide with this defense? Any recommendations? I can also prove to the prosecution and jury that I am on medication and receiving treatment already.
