Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
A family friend is in jail. He has a private attorney and the attorney did show up for the arraignment. However he has questions and has tried to contact his attorney for a week straight with no response and no visits. Is this normal? Should he be concerned?

Sometimes people hire attorneys who do not prepare for trial, they do little or nothing for them, the attorney will tell the client on the day of trial that he has no chance and has to plead guilty. This type of attorney is known as a "dump truck" and is no better than many public defenders. Your friend should ask the attorney at the next court date what, exactly the attorney has done to prepare for trial, which witnesses the attorney has interviewed, and which motions the attorney has filed or will file (and if not filed, when). The friend should eyeball the attorney's file to see whether or not it is well-organized. If possible, and I realize sometimes it isn't, the friend should write letters to the attorney commnuicating his concerns.
your friend should be very concerned. Your arrorney should NEVER miss a court appearance and should respond to calls from clients in a timely fashion. I wish your friend the best...David Wallin
