Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Is fee for using Public Defender legal?
My son used a public defender a few years ago and now he's being dunned by a bill collecting agency for $200 due to this. If one can not afford an attorney and one is appointed for you, how can he be billed for this?

Legal counsel is provided for free for those who are unable to pay. If it is determined that you can pay even a small amount you will be billed based on that ability to pay.
