Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Felony DUI 1985/Applying for a firearm license
In 1985 I was convicted of Felony Drunk Driving.
My question is;
If I apply to own a firearm(a rifle and a hand gun) in the state of Colorado, will I be able to legally own a gun or not? Also, can I purchase a firearm from a private citizen legally?
If the answer is NO, how can I resolve this problem?

Re: Felony DUI 1985/Applying for a firearm license
I don't practice law in Colorado. So I'm not familiar with their gun laws. I suspect convicted felons can't own or possess guns there. Although the law maybe more liberal than California. I'd start with visiting a gun shop and checking on any paper work that would have to be filled out to buy a gun from that shop. Gun shop owners and clerks in gun shops are very friendly, and down to earth. You can probably buy and sell guns between private parties in Colorada. However, if it's against the law for you to own a gun. Then how you get it is immaterial. Next I'd check on how to have your felony reduced or dropped. Again a Colorado attorney can help you there. There are several programs in California, and one of them is that the governor declares you've reformed your self. Colorado may have similar programs. So go to your local law library or a free clinic at a local law school, and see what your options are as regards to your conviction for a felony. The two options I've just covered are: go to a gun ship and look at the paper work you have to sign (remember they now check the FBI's register on criminals and gun sales on a computer right from the gun shop); and then check to see if you can have your conviction down graded or some other option. If the law is not crystal clear don't take a chance. And if I were you I'd forget the pistol and stick with guns that are clearly meant for hunting, like bolt action high powered rifles and shotguns with long hunting barrels. Also leave the barrels alone on twenty twos. Do not shorten up any of the barrels on rifles or shotguns. If in doubt have only weapons that are meant to be used for hunting. Do not live with someone and think you're going to claim the weapons are theirs. This will only get both of you in trouble.
