Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

felony embezlment

I had rented a car to go on a short trip. When we returned our car had been broken into. They damaged our car very badly, I asked the rental company if we could keep the car to fix ours. They said just to return it as soon as possible. We moved about a week after that. we hadn't been able to complete the repair to our car yet. I did immediatly notify the rental co. of our new address and phone #. As we were fixing our car and found problem after problem I would continue letting the co. know that I had no intension of keeping the car I was returning it and if it was alright to keep it longer. They said o.k. just return it as soon as possible. We ended up keeping the car for almost one year. I had gotten pulled over and the officer said the car was reported stolen. The reason I think this happened was because the car we originally rented started overheating and we were advised to take it to the airport location. We were given another car. The difference is that the original location was a different branch the airport had to do something different to be able to give us the car. I belive that there was a lack of communication between the two departments. I have no record. The 1 car was in CA, the 2 in NV & arrested in CA.
