Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Found stolen items in other persons posession - he's trying to sell them back
Several months ago my car was broken into in my driveway and some valuable & unique sporting equipment was stolen. I filed a police report that day and never heard about it again.
A couple days ago, a close friend of mine was at his mini storage and saw an associate of his in his own mini storage. My friend saw my unique sporting equipment and questioned the guy about it. He said he bought it off some guy for $400 (seems like a high price), and he is willing to sell them back. I am 100% sure that these are my items, and the guy is not the type to break into cars himself.
My question is do I have to pay this $400, or is there another way to get my gear back?

Call the police and provide the stolen item numbers and explain the situation. They will go and check, if all is as you state, they will recover your items for you.

Call the police in and report the stolen property location. If you can demonstrate it is yours, they might be able to seize and return it.
