Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

fourth waiver search parolee

I was a passenger in a friend's car. He was on parole and was driving without a valid driver license. The sheriff stopped him and conducted a ''fourth waiver'' search. Can they legally search me and my personal belongings, i.e. my purse, backpack just because I'm riding with the parolee?

The police could search you, and if they found something the expensive private lawyer you would have to hire would then argue that the search was illegal. Recent case law tends to favor passengers in such circumstances.
