Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I have Grand Theft (over $50k) charges filed against me in CA. The alleged crime is said to have occured before my DUI convition for which I'm currently on probation for 1 more yr. Other than the DUI, I have no prior record. If convicted for the grand theft, What type of sentence can I expect? Does my DUI conviction affect the sentencing?

Because the grand theft conduct occurred before the conviction for the DUI, anything that happens on it should not affect your DUI probation.

What type of sentence can you get? Grand theft is a felony and carries up to three years state prison. What you'll actually get depends on what you get convicted of (if anything), whether restitution is paid back very quickly in the court process, the jurisdiction, the judge, the DA and to some extent, your attorney.

If you don't have an attorney representing you on the grand theft case, get one ASAP. There may be things you can to do get yourself in a much better position to lessen the punishment by doing certain things BEFORE you go to court. For a theft of over fifty thousand dollars, you could do a substantial amount of time, so you need to work with your attorney to protect yourself the best you can.
