Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

What would happen legally to my friend if he is caught for forging someone's signature on a check after he cashed it? The check was mistakenly sent to his address and the name on the check was close enough to have it cashed at a mom and pop shop. The check was nearly $800. And the police have already been informed. My friend's family is only wondering what to expect. Can you tell me what legal proceedings may occur? Jail time (approximately how long), fines, community service, and/or probation. We want to know the consequences.

What sentence actually gets imposed depends on many factors:

His record, the particular facts of the case (beyond what you've described), the jurisdiction (you don't mention where this is), the judge, the DA and to some extent, his attorney.

Assuming no prior record, there may be some jail and/or community service involved, probation for three years... Like I said, it really depends.
